Zak Martin

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Tony's passing. I only heard the news a year after the event. I live in Spain, and have lost contact with many old friends and aquaintances in Ireland. But Tony had a standing invitation to come and stay with me in Granada, and every time I met him - which was once or twice a year in recent years, usually when I was home for Christmas - he told me he was "trying to organise it", and that I should expect him to arrive on my doorstep "any day". I was looking forward to it. He was a good friend and one of the most intelligent and genuine people I knew in Ireland. I had many a heated (but always good-humoured) arguments/discussions with him, on subjects as diverse and wide-ranging as art, politics, UFOs, astrology, literature, films, quantum physics, ancient civilizations - you name it, Tony always had a well-informed, interesting and original take on it. He was one of the three or four people I would make a point of looking up when I was back in Ireland. The last time I saw him, we stood for hours in the freezing drizzle, almost until sunrise, discussing the state of art in the computer age : )

Very sorry and sad to lose him.

Alison McMahon Bohan

I was deeply shocked to hear of Tony's death from Joe Harrison today, 13 January 2010. Had I known earlier, I would have attended Tony's service tomorrow (I live in Yorkshire). I have good memories of Tony, from the 1970s when we lived in Dublin, and frequented bars, galleries and nightspots and talked into the night. We met every few years to catch up, most recently when he travelled to Leeds for my 50th birthday party. To all his friends and family, my sincere condolences.
