Inspiring and very nice neighbour

I am devastated by today's announcement in NRCHandelsblad that Peter Mair died during the family holidays in Connemara. From 1994 till 2005 he was our neighbour in Bloemendaal, Holland. He was a very nice man, loved his wife and children;showed also interest in his neighbourhood, our family, specially our youngest Daan, who grew up with Cathleen.

I think of all the nice talks we had: about politics (how to fight indifference of citizens), about gardening (well done by Karin and Opa Tilmans), about cricket, about Ireland , Irish whiskey, etc.

He will be remembered as one of the nicest persons in our life. Our thoughts are with Karin, Cathleen, John and Tessa.

On behalf of the Warnaars-family,

Johannes Warnaars

Shocked and saddened

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Prof. Peter Mair. As my Ph.D. supervisor at the University of Leiden, he was a source of encouragement and inspiration: a kind man and an outstanding scholar. My deepest condolences to his wife and children.

Ania van der Meer

Sad news and a terrible loss
I just met Prof. Peter Mair last July, so we didn't have time to build a close relationship. However, I immediately had the impression of a very amiable person with a vivid intelligence and an open attitude towards others. A terrible loss for the European University Institute, for the academic community and above all for his family and friends.
