Late Mrs Margaret Oates, Carrick on Shannon

First came to know Mrs Oates when I went to Carrick on Shannon to work with her son, Michael, then Senior Reporter on the 'Leitrim Observer.' Its says everything about how we 'understood' each other from the start that we exchanged Christmas cards for 37 consecutive years. Being natives of Sligo probably helped!

Deepest sympathy to families of Maureen and Michael, who described his mum, in her 90th year, so wonderfully for all her extended family, neighours and friends after her Mass of Christian Burial. The girls' singing at the end was sublime. Many years ago when I was searching for an image to describe somebody I was writing about Michael helpfully offered a quotation from an Irish language poem: '' Laimh a bhi mar bhalsam 's tu tinn'' ie offered a healing hand when you were sick. He put a wonderful context on where such an idea might have come from all those decades ago. A wonderful, warm funny valediction suggested not just that a woman widowed with two small children in 1965 life a complete life but also a 'completed' life. May she rest in Peace.

To the Family and extended family of Mrs Margaret Oates.

Michael and Maureen my feelings are of deep regret and great sadness on hearing of the sudden death of your mother. Your mother as you both know was a woman of her time and part of a great family of mothers from the square. My immediate memory of your mother would be a lady fully focused on the business in hand but would still make time to speak with who ever she met on her way to daily mass or the shops. Mothers are special so you wont be surprised when I say you will miss her terribly, but you both have the great memories and they are forever. May she rest in peace where she belongs with the Lord in Heaven.
