I thought of Miss Sliney (as I knew her) today. I often think of her from my days at the Holy Faith. She was a favourite teacher and her Latin and English lessons have led me on a life long love of literature. RIP Phil Sweeney (nee Dowd)

Mary Sliney
Dear Mary- I thought of you today and searched for you on Internet. Never thought I'd find out you had passed away. You remain the most influential teacher in my memory from school in the 1970s. I came late to academic life and now have a PhD but remember you for the passion you had for teaching us and stretching us beyond what we thought we could do.... Thank you for believing we could do more and giving me a love of words and written expression...
