Michael Dwyer RIP

I am saddened by the death of Michael Dwyer. Form the beginnings of my interest in film as a teenager in 1980's Dublin, I always felt a great connection to Michael, as it was obvious from his reviews and interviews that he loved the same thing I did - films and the people who make them.

I felt safe as a reader, in Michael's company as a reviewer, (not a critic) and saw his recommendations as a benchmark of un-cynical, honest, film reviewing, (and when I didn’t agree) I trusted him because he loved what cinema is capable of showing in all sizes, shades and stories.

I loved also, having heard him on radio, that his favourite film was Point Break for the pure thrill of it! In balance, I also remember his detestation of Amadeus and in time, but no less consistent, it’s re-issued Directors Cut. And while I never fully understood, this contrast, to me, is what made him a bonafide reviewer. Having attended many events he hosted, I regret now never having had introduction ororopportunity, to discuss Amadeus with him.

From the letters and condolences since Michael's death, I am heartened by the similarities expressed by star and reader alike - that Michael was a gentleman, who loved film, and inspired many others with this love.

Those who enjoyed reading Michael’s Friday reviews (over coffee), will remember them as considerate(rather than cynical sound bite) reviewswhich inspired the viewers and makers of (Irish) films.

I like to think of Michael now inhabiting Powell and Pressburger's cinematic vision of heaven - and revelling in the stellar company! And I hope his friends in the Irish Film Industry will soon honour Michael with a statue in the foyer of the IFI – and then he’ll always be there to discuss Amadeus.

My condolences to Michael’s Family and Partner.

Gerard Blanch
