My time with Don...

I only met Don in April of 2009.

I only spent four days in his wonderfully warm company with my partner Lorraine (Don's niece). We were shown the most open and generous care whist on holiday in Dublin. His thoughtfulness and consideration of our comfort and entertainment was humbling.

Don regaled us with stories of "his Dublin", his stories of life in the Garda appeared to be larger than life to this simple kiwi boy....but Don's life was far from ordinary, and Don WAS larger than life!

From communion received from the Pope, to stories of Maggie Thatcher's visit to Dublin, including the diversion of an official helicopter so he could hover over his house and wave to his wife, Kay.

From my very short time with him I deduced he was indeed a man of infinite character; he possessed a boundless capacity for mischief and strong sense of right and wrong. Don was really a man of spirit, compassion, creativity, purpose, passion, love and enormous generosity.

As the Maori people say, he had great "Mana" (great stature and high standing as a wise and strong man) - not born of title or position but inner strength of spirit. He embraced life with a fever that many younger people could learn from.

His greatest love, Kay, he had lost... now he is with her…

Ka hinga atu he tete-kura - ka hara-mai he tete-kura.(As one fern frond (person) dies - one is born to take its place.)

Paul
