SMITH Sydney Bernard (Dundalk, County Louth) - October 11, 2008, at home surrounded by his family, born in Glasgow 1936, grew up in Portstewart, Co. Derry, was educated at Clongowes Wood School, Queen's College, Oxford, and the University of Iowa International Writer's Program. Sydney was elected as a member of Aosdana in 1982 and was a noted and published poet, novelist and dramatist, actor, as well as an educator at Clongowes Wood School, the University of Iowa, Sandymount School in Dublin and Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. Sydney was recognized for his prose and praised for his writings by the late poet laureate Ted Hughes, entertained many with his satirical wit and humour and was always willing to debate conventional methods or opinions. Predeceased by his mother Bridget and father Sydney Clark Smith, sister Kathleen Rowan and grandson Andrew Smith; he will be greatly missed by his family, including brother Cormac, wife Isabella and family (Windsor, Ontario), beloved sister Mary (Sister Anne Dominic of Liverpool, England), sons, Daniel (wife Gail, grandsons Declan and Fintan of Cleveland, Ohio), Sydney G. Smith (wife Teresa, grandsons S.J. and Oisin of Dundalk, Ireland), Cormac M. and wife Melinda (Elmira, New York), daughter Emer and husband Bill Schiefen (Brewer, Maine), Cynthia J. Smith (Seneca Falls, New York), extended family members in England, Italy and Canada and many numerous friends in Ireland and many different lands and countries. In fulfilment of Sydney's wishes, his remains have been donated to medical research. Requiem Mass will be at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Ard Easmuin, Dundalk, tomorrow (Tuesday), October 14, 2008 at noon.
