To a remarkable man

you transcended politics, you were upright, cultured and good-natured, you represented the Ireland we aspired to when we were at UCG in the seventies and we will miss your presence and stature; it is fitting that the two countries came to to a reconcilement this week as independent proud neighbours;ar dheis de go raibh d'anam; we were all proud of you

I feel like I've known you forever!

Thanks to my parents, who are now deceased, I feel like I have know you forever. Any time you came on the radio or the TV, we were all encouraged to listen to your word of wisdom with respect. Later on, we came to know you ourselves and to follow every step of your political journey. I have a bound copy of the Anglo-Irish Agreement, given to me by my aunt who worked in the Irish Embassy in London at the time.

From the early 90's, your weekly columns in the Irish Times have been one of my weekly 'treats', saved up until I had a quiet moment when I could concentrate, so that I could reflect on whatever topic you were writing about. You covered such a vast range of diverse topics - each one worthy of consideration. I never minded what the topic was - each week, I read it with equal enthusiasm, even though I sometimes needed to reread it or reflect on it to get its full meaning. Saturdays will never be quite the same without! May you rest in peace.
