Bernie

I noticed my late brother Sean's tribute and was guilty I did not leave one myself. Fr Connellan. or Bernie as we called him, was also my French teacher for five years. He was indeed a wonderful person. He loved France and regaled us with his stories of Paris where I think he spent much of his holidays. His huge tape recorder, when he got it working , would teach us phonetics and pronounciation which are second nature to me still, albeit I chose to write in English. He was among those before their time who did not use corporal punishment, yet his class was one of the few where I was well behaved. His surprised and disappointed admonitsion "Anton!" at misbehaviour was enoigh to shame me to conformity. Nous ne verrons pas son pareil encore - Tony Browne

Memorie of St. Munchins

Fr. Connellan taught me French in St. Munchins College Henry St. and Corbally, from 1959 to 1964.

He was a wonderful teacher and easily the best and most committed in the College, and a very nice man also. I found the French I learnt from him most useful throughout my life, though I never achieved the fluency he would have wished for. He would be pleased to know that my daughter is a fluent French speaker.

Sean Browne (originally from Bruff)
