Sister Brid

You were my English teacher in Pres Athenry 1969-71. I wouldn't have taught English in the way you did - not that I ever became an English teacher - but that's not the point. What you conveyed was a love of the subject which I have never lost and might have, had English merely been a compulsory subject and a vehicle for getting to 3rd level, to be scrapped the instant that object was achieved. Your duty as principal with its attendant politics took time and energy that you probably sometimes privately wished could have been spent gathering the "enchanted herbs" of literature. Nevertheless, you did your bit for society and I've no doubt you enjoyed life, which is all that matters. I remember that photo of you taken with Sean McBride, someone who had a personal link with W.B.Yeats, one of your life's inspirations - I'll never know now but I wonder was that your happiest moment?

Paul H, Lisheenkyle
