I was lucky to have known Mary and was very sorry to hear that she passed away. I met Mary on a dramatic sailing trip in 2008 and we kept in touch after that. i last saw her when i stayed with her in oxford in january 2020. I feel privileged to have know such a warm, funny, kind, caring, interesting and interested woman. Please accept my condolences and i extend my sympathies to freya and trace, deirdre and eta, russell and the rest of the family. very sorry for your loss.

As generous as she was intrepid, as hospitable and fun-loving as her mind was inquiring and original, Mary leaves us many great memories but also a big gap in our lives. We are the poorer without her and will miss her.

I am sorry to hear of Mary's death. I have fond memories of the integrity, insight and good humour she brought to her work for the features department of this newspaper. Condolences to her family and friends.
