Dear Pat,

I have learnt indirectly that Joe passed away.

I am of course very sad.

I keep an excellent memory of him from both the human and scientific viewpoints. Unlike many in the scientific medium, he was not arrogant and very gentle.

We always had excellent relationships. He sent Ghassan Al-Sayyed to my lab in Lyon and we co-operated within two EU projects. That was a very enjoyable and fruitful time.

I admired his in-depth and useful research studies.

I am sure that your children and grand-children will help you through this sad period. I hope that you are yourself healthy.

With my hearty condolences,

Pierre Pichat

pichat@ec-lyon.fr
