My Deepest sympathy. I still remember with great fondness Eavans generosity, and the friendship and encouragement she showed me when I came up to Trinity many years ago. John O'Kelly

A Thanksgiving with Eavan

For once we were having a Thanksgiving without most of the family at Mom's house is Palo Alto -- just my sister and me. We invited another solo woman friend and, on an off-chance, I invited Eavan, whom I had met earlier in the year. Mom didn't want to make mashed potatoes. I insisted we had to have them if we were having an Irishwoman to dinner. When we told Eavan the story, she straightened up and declared, "Of course we'll have the spuds. And I will peel them!" Which she then proceeded to do, punctuating her cooking with her wit, erudition, humor and gossip. I am so sorry she is no longer with us in person, but so glad she was so widely published that I can find bits of her in my library.

Leanne Ulvang, leannemu@hotmail.com

Eavan offered me a poem when she heard of my mother's death. I can offer her family only distant condolences from California. I am so sorry for your loss. Leanne Ulvang
