KUGLER, On November 28, 2024, Hans-Jürgen Kugler passed away peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin. Beloved husband of Gerlinde, treasured father of Aindreas and Cristin, father-in-law of Patricia and Robert, brother of Uwe, and grandfather of 5 grandchildren. Hans-Jürgen was a man of great kindness and strength who touched the lives of all who knew him. Surrounded by his family, he left this world in peace and love. Hans-Jürgen Kugler was a distinguished computer scientist and esteemed member of the Irish software engineering community. His academic journey began with a Master of Science from the University of Dortmund in 1977. In 1980, he moved to Ireland to join Trinity College Dublin as a lecturer, where he played a pivotal role in securing Ireland’s first software engineering research grant from the EU’s Esprit programme. His contributions were instrumental in the establishment of Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, where he served as Industrial Director from its inception in 2005. Beyond academia, Hans-Jürgen was the Chief Scientist at Kugler Maag Cie, a consultancy specializing in the improvement of business and product development processes. His expertise and leadership were highly regarded internationally, in both academic and industrial circles. A ceremony to celebrate Hans-Jürgen’s life will take place on Thursday, December 5, at 2:30 PM in the Victorian Chapel at Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harold’s Cross, Dublin.
