TWOHIG - Richard “Dick” Twohig passed to Eternal Life one hundred and one years ago today on November 17, 1922 at Kilmainham Gaol. He was assigned 2nd Battalion Dublin Brigade. He was young Soldier For The Cause and an Irish Hero. Dick was 22 years old at his passing. During their study, a semester in Ireland program sponsored by The Twohig Family Fund, a group of students from the Irish Studies Department at The Catholic University of America and led by Irish scholar, Professor Gregory Baker recently visited Kilmainham. This is where Dick, and other brave young Irish patriots gave their lives for The Cause. These students also had the great honour and good fortune of paying their respects to Dick and the other Irish heroes at the Republican Plot at the Irish National Cemetery at Glasnevin. In this hallowed place Dick and centuries of courageous Irish patriots have been laid to their well deserved eternal rest with full military honours. In the memory of Dick we offer Timothy 4:7: “I fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Richard “Dick” Twohig’s ultimate sacrifice and that of the other brave Irish patriots who fought for The Cause will never be forgotten by Ireland or by the diaspora. With profound respect, great admiration and deep gratitude for your sacrifice, your cousins of The Twohig Family of Florida.
